Sept. 19, 1925 – Sept. 24, 2023 Augusta K. "Gus" Brannen, former co-owner of specialty chemical maker Niacet Corp. in Niagara Falls, died Sept. 24 in her home on St. Simons Island, Ga., five days after her 98th birthday. Born Augusta King in Witcher, W. Va., south of Charleston, she was one of six children. An honor student as a girl, she attended Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston. While working at a Union Carbide Corp. plant in South Charleston, she met Michael R. Brannen. Six weeks later, on June 29, 1946, they were married.
